Abstract

Oxygen is essential for survival. However, its univalent reduction generates Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which are harmful to living cells and highly associated with wide range of pathogenesis such as diabetes, liver damage, inflammation, aging, neurological disorders and cancer. Antioxidants are compounds that protect cells against the damaging effects of ROS, which results in oxidative stress leading to cellular damage.

Abstract

The paper examines the distribution of authorship of papers on RFID to examine the validity of Lotka's Law. Papers from Web of Science on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for the years 1990 to 2010 were collected for the study. Lotka's Law is applied in its generic form, by using the least square technique, linear equation and finding the value of the constants and testing the same through Kolmogorov Smirnov Test and finding the Correlation Co-efficient. The values of exponent n and constant C obtained proved that Lotka's Law does not hold good for authorship distribution pattern in (RFID) research.

Abstract

The best gift of a mother to her baby is breast milk. The breast feeding practices vary among different regions. Hence the present cross sectional study was conducted among the rural young mothers to evaluate their knowledge about the advantages of breast feeding and to study their breast feeding and sanitary practices. This study was conducted among 150 women living in 9 villages of Bargur taluk who were selected using convenience sampling method with the inclusion criteria that they were 18 to 25 years old, married and having at least one 1 to 5 years old child. A pretested schedule was used to collect data regarding their general information, knowledge about breast feeding and their breast feeding and sanitary practices. Though all the selected rural mothers were having poor socio economic status, they had a good knowledge about the advantages of breast feeding and correct breast feeding practices. Because of the good sanitary habits of the mothers, their children did not suffer from any infectious diseases for the past fifteen days.

Abstract

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self-configuring infrastructure less network of mobile devices connected by wireless.A protocol manages group membership and controls the path that multicast data takes over the network. Examples of multicast routing protocols include Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM). There are lots of multicast routing protocols, some works with wired networks while the others with wireless networks, some protocols deals with both wired and wireless networks. But applying this concept in Mobile Ad Hoc networks (Manets) is a big challenge. The main aim of this paper is to explore the performance characteristics of multicast protocols.

Abstract

Imparting right knowledge about menstruation and menstrual hygiene to adolescent girls is very important to protect them from various reproductive tract infections and reproductive health. This cross sectional study was conducted in adolescent girls studying in Government School (GS) (n=50) and Private School (PS) (n=50) school (N=100) to know about the knowledge and practice of menstrual hygiene among the adolescent girls in Barugur, Tamil Nadu before and after an education program. Among the selected girls, 14 to 15 years old were 55 per cent. Hindus were more than 90 percent. Nearly 58 per cent of PS and 40 per cent of GS belonged to Class III of Prasad’s economic classification. PS had significantly more knowledge about menstrual hygiene and better practice before attending the education program and there was a significant improvement (P>0.05) in the knowledge and practice of GS and PS after the program. Periodical conduct of many such education programs is essential for practice of proper menstrual hygiene by rural adolescent girls.

Abstract

Watermelon (Citrulluslanatus) which originated in Africa is widely cultivated throughout the world including India. This fruit is known for its nutritional value and is relished by many people. Only the pulp of this fruit is used commercially and the rind which is also rich in so many nutrients is considered agricultural waste. To add economic value to nutritionally rich agricultural waste i.e., watermelon rind, three edible value-added products of watermelon rind were prepared and evaluated by comparing them with their controls. They were found to be better than the controls in appearance, taste, flavour, texture, colour and overall acceptability. The cost of their preparation was also economical when compared with their controls. Hence, farmers and self-help group women may be trained to prepare and market these products so that watermelon rind which is considered agricultural waste can be used commercially. *
